It's designed to provide extra drive for distorted amps or even a light overdrive that gives you control over the dynamics of a clean sound.

The level of distortion can be controlled by the pick attack and pickup volume. Pick harder for more overdrive, pick softer for a cleaner tone. The unique FACUS control adjusts the feel, dynamics and overall EQ of the distortion. Turning this control fully counterclockwise produces a mellow tone with little distortion that is perfect for jazz and blues, while turning it fully clockwise produces a bright distortion with a slight boost in the high frequencies.

Previously, the only similar overdrive was the BJF Honey Bee, but now it's available as the Mad Professor version. Mad Professor's SHOD has a tighter sound and is designed to work well with a variety of guitars and amps, making it more versatile.
