Features
The opportunity to work with the legendary guitarist, musician, producer, and founding member of the British band Delirious was one we couldn't pass up. StuG requested a drive pedal that could be used in a variety of situations, including on tour and in the studio, and the Kilt was born.
Kilt is a 2-in-1 drive/boost pedal packed with the power, range, tone and options that guitarists want in a small package. The left section of the pedal is heavily inspired by the legendary fuzz pedal Expandora, but it has been significantly updated and has a new specification that adds a whole new tone and usability to the classic effect. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a pedal that has it all. From tube-like transparent tones to bluesy overdrive, thick and natural distortion, and even fuzz sounds, it can cover it all with just one unit.
The Kilt has separate drive and boost sections, and the left drive section uses a carefully selected op-amp with an ultra-low noise, smooth structure and character that seems to surpass the original Expandora. In addition, the three mini toggle switches on the drive section allow for even more diverse sound settings. The Cut toggle switch controls the low end cut/boost. The down position is the basic setting, but the bass boost that was largely missing in the original Expandora is a powerful and easy-to-use setting. The up position creates a sharp tone close to the original Expandora. The G1 and G2 toggle switches allow you to select various variations of distortion by switching the input and output of the clipping section in the circuit using resistor values. This method is very different from the diode clipping selectors found in regular drive pedals. This gives you a variety of sound and tone options, from light transparent drive to thick wall distortion. The controls on the left drive section are, from left to right, Volume, Tone, and Gain, and while they are standard controls, this is a multifunctional and intuitive pedal.
The boost section on the right is a JFET boost circuit that has a tube-like subtle roughness and presence to boost the lead sound or push the front end of the drive section on the left for more distortion sounds. The Boost knob controls the volume level of the boost, and the mini order toggle switch switches the connection order of the boost and drive sections. In the down position it is pre-boost, and in the up position it is post-boost.
It is powered by a standard 9V DC, has a true bypass switch, and is housed in a custom polished aluminum enclosure.
